History Nuggets In 1882, the Pearl Street Station in Manhattan, New York started operation. It is often credited with being the first central electric generating plant in the United States. It was developed by Thomas Edison and produced DC electric power. Its main load initially was electric lights, also developed by Thomas Edison.
